Ilfracombe’s Victorian Week captured on Google Street View
A leading seaside resort for North Devon family holidays, Ilfracombe has had its streets stored on the databases of Google Street View in a totally unique way. Users can now see Ilfracombe from anywhere in the world and witness that the people on the streets are in fact dressed in Victorian clothing. This isn’t a scene from 150 years ago – Google actually captured the streets during the town’s Victorian Week, celebrated this year between the 7th and 15th June. The images show crowds of people on the streets dressed in full Victorian costume, as well as a gang of cowboys preparing to ‘stage a robbery’ at the town’s Natwest bank. Celebrating the reign of one of Britain’s greatest queens, Queen Victoria, during the 19th century, Victorian Week is one of Ilfracombe’s landmark events, with both locals and visitors taking part in the festivities. Opening with a parade in Victorian costume through the town, activities continue all through the week and include a showcase of vintage cars, concerts and the chance to take part in parlour and lawn games. Victorian Week is just one of many highlights in Ilfracombe’s events calendar, with a number of unique and fun events taking place throughout the year for all to enjoy.
