The first batch of rescued grey seal pups, who have been looked after at the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, have been released back into the Bristol Channel following a successful recovery programme.
Recovered from the coast of the Bristol Channel as isolated pups, the four seals were first cared for at the RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Somerset, before making the transfer to one of the enclosures at the Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, where there is a pool large enough for them to live and act naturally.
The first two seals, Jessie-Star and Jack, were successfully released back into the Bristol Channel off the coast of Combe Martin, allowing them to live and cope in their natural habitat. The second pair, Molly and Angel, realised that they were going to be taken away, and put up more resistance. Eventually, the park had to wait until the next morning, when the pool was drained, and the seals were safely released out to sea.
The seals have been a great attraction at the park and a hit with the visitors, and the success of their recovery means that the park will be welcoming a new batch of rescued seals to the park over the next few weeks. If you’d like to visit the grey seals as well as all the other animals and attractions at the park, why not stay in our nearby Combe Martin cottages, perfect for exploring Combe Martin and the large surrounding North Devon area?
