Come and meet the animals who live at Smythen Farm
When you visit us here at Smythen Farm holiday cottages for a luxury break you are of course blessed with some of the most spectacular surroundings, award-winning beaches, Exmoor, and wonderful local villages and towns. But if you want on-site facilities as well, then you have come to the right place. Smythen Farm offer not only modern swimming pool facilities but also their very own farm yard animals you and the rest of the family can enjoy petting and riding. Here’s a bit more about what’s on offer for you: Pony Rides Our pony rides are available to the young children of the guests staying in our holiday cottages completely free of charge. Pony rides typically take place twice a week, depending on the weather conditions. The pony rides are for children 12 and under, and the fun rides they’ll enjoy consist of the ponies being lead, while reined, around our paddocks for around 10-15 minutes. During the ride we insist on children wearing protective clothing, with riding hats are provided by Smythen Farm. Our Horses Milly This beautiful horse is 13.2 hands and is a wonderfully-natured pony who is a great ride for the older children staying at our North Devon Farm Cottages. Kelly She is a strikingly attractive horse that the children love to be around. She’s 11 hands and is great for our pony rides. Billy Billy is our trusty steed who tends to be involved in most of the pony rides. Our faithful Billy is wonderfully placid and the young children just fall in love with him! If you are a more advanced rider we can recommend local riding stables to you upon arrival. Donkeys Shrek and Barnaby are our lovable Donkeys. They have only been with us a short time in comparison to some of the other farm residents, but these fine specimens are well known for their very docile and affectionate nature. Pigs Our two Kune Kune piggies Boril and Bell are so very friendly because they have been hand-reared. They’ll never grow too large and are a particularly docile breed who really enjoy peoples’ company. You’ll find that when you enter the pen they run up to you with a little grunting sound. Cute! We have been training them to be put on a harness so that our guests can take Boril and Bell for pig walks. Sheep The adorable sheep here are called George, Cindy and Polyann. Our three fluffy sheep are so friendly as well as gentle that you’ll never want to leave them alone! Our daughters love nothing more than to take them for walks and as they are so passive, they can be held and cuddled, which is a fantastic way to introduce sheep to toddlers and young children. Chickens At Smythen Farm we have a host of free range chickens who produce delicious eggs that are available for our guests to buy. You are more than welcome to visit them with children, and we have built a chicken coup with the nest boxes positioned low down so that the little ones can easily collect the eggs.
