In the seaside setting of Ilfracombe, near our holiday cottage complex, Devon there was a gathering of hundreds of dignitaries and members of the public who turned out to officially welcome Ilfracombe’s newest arrival- the town’s lifeboat. On Saturday 27 June a naming and dedication ceremony was held inside Ilfracombe Lifeboat Station. Divisional operations manager, Tom Mansell, explained how the lifeboat station had been extended by 5 meters, additionally facilities had been improved for the crew, along with an upgraded workshop for the mechanics. It was then the turn of Barry High OBE, to hand over the Shannon class lifeboat, called The Barry and Peggy High Foundation, to the RNLI. “I am glad to be here today for the naming and dedication of this lifeboat,” he said. “I understand I am the first living person who has gifted a lifeboat to the RNLI, and I hope others will do the same.” Following the ceremony the lifeboat was launched and staff sailed it around to Cheyne Beach so that a display could be carried out for the on-looking public who were in attendance.
