Heritage Project of the Year: Lynmouth Pavilion

Visitors to holiday cottages Devon are often keen to explore the heritage of the region with it being so rich. The area is steeped in history and is home to many fantastic heritage sites. With the annual Michelmores/Western Morning News Property Awards on the horizon we take a step back in time to look at the Heritage Project of the Year. There are four finalists from Devon with a folly in East Budleigh, a seafront pavilion in Lynmouth, a medieval monastery in Torquay and a former hospital in Truro all in contention. The focus of this article is on the Lynmouth Pavilion. The project was jointly funded by Devon County Council’s Invest in Devon Fund and the Exmoor National Park Authority with the aim of the project being a redevelopment of the derelict Lynmouth Pavilion, transforming it in to a ‘must see’ destination. Additionally further aims were to produce an interpretation centre that is themed on the National Park’s distinct qualities and to act as a year-round ‘learning and discovery hub’ that would attract visitors to the area. Although the pavilion is not listed, the original building was of local significance and highly valued by the community for its range of uses over the years, including a waiting area for steamers, a theatre, an arcade, badminton court and even a zoo! Although the pavilion is all new build, the original 1930’s blueprints were used as a guide for fabrication of the steel works with the new structure displaying a similar streetscape on the Esplanade as in the 1930s. Located adjacent to Lynmouth’s iconic cliff railway and comprising of an exhibition, community and education space including a mix of hi-tech and more traditional exhibits ranging from a big touch screen table and iPads to the more traditional seaside photo board. And the first floor is the location of a privately run café. The judges considered the new building with its ‘veneer of heritage’ to be admirable value for money at a cost of £1.2m. The award winners are due to be announced at a gala dinner at the St Mellion International Resort on May 8.
