Discover Barnstaple’s Pannier Market

The History of Pannier Market:

Barnstaple has been a market town since the Anglo-Saxon era, and inthe days before the market was built as we know it today, people would bring their goods and produce to Barnstaple in panniers (baskets) to sell on thestreet, which is how Pannier got its name.

In the 1850s the market area was redeveloped due to health regulations and the structure that was built, now Pannier Market, has remained this way for over 150 years. The building alone is worth a visit, with a beautiful high glass and timber roof that is not only stunning, but also allows lots of natural light to flood the market.

When the new market was built in 1855, designer R.D. Gould also planned a road opposite Pannier market lined with a number of butchers' shops, now known as 'Butchers Row'. This unique row still exists, although onlytwo of the shops are still butchers, with the rest now selling produce, flowers and much more.

What's on at PannierMarket?

The market is open Tuesday to Saturday throughout the year, and some Mondays depending on the season. Opening hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on opening days, and the market is always closed on Sundays and bankholidays. Each day at the market features a different array of goods for sale;the schedule is as follows:Wednesdays: Antiques and collectables

Barnstaple is only 12 miles from Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages, so it's an ideal destination for a day trip. Pannier Market is a must-see but there are also a number of great restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops in the town to keep everyone amused for the day!
