Five great picnic spots around North Devon

It’s officially the end of winter, and that means only one thing- spring is upon us. You can now look forward to days that stay lighter for longer, more sunshine, and the birds back out to sing too. And after the recent unsavoury weather near our self-catering cottages we can’t think of anything more delightful than taking a stroll through some of the country’s most scenic landscapes and enjoying a delightful picnic in these wonderful surroundings. Take a look at five of our favourites: Woolacombe Woolacombe is a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic all year round but especially in the warmer months or when the sun is shining on a fresh spring afternoon there’s no better place than the bank on the esplanade that overlooks the glorious stretch of beach Woolacombe has. Sit and watch the surf or take your picnic down to the beach, but careful you don’t get sand in your sandwiches! Watermouth Bay, Nr Ilfracombe Watermouth Bay is a spot for those who want to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that North Devon offers. Walk along the trail beside the harbour and look out over the water as far as the eye can see. This is a real gem of a destination recommended for a relaxing picnic not far from our self-catering cottages. Baggy Point Baggy Point overlooks the popular village of Croyde and its world famous beach. A delightful walk from the National Trust car park takes you up on to the path that runs in a loop around Baggy Point giving you the opportunity to enjoy a range of fantastic picnic spots. There are some benches on the left as you walk up the path you can sit on the areas of grass and countryside with some phenomenal views to go with your lunch. Porlock Hill You won’t mind taking a small trip from North Devon to Porlock Hill for the day when you realise the breath-taking views on offer, and depending on where you choose to park you can expect to be wowed by views over Porlock Vale out over to Wales or inland across the rolling hills of the moor. Porlock Hill provides plenty of spots for a lovely picnic, which have been expertly grazed by the local Exmoor ponies, making it the perfect place for picnicking spots and you might get to meet the ponies too! Landacre Landacre is another option that is in the direction of Porlock from the North Devon area. A great destination for a picnic. Spend the afternoon sat by the bridge soaking up the scenery, there are also some perfect picnic spots that run along the river banks for all to enjoy. The Exmoor ponies and sheep are to thank for the well-kept river bank much like up on Porlock Hill which makes such excellent picnic areas.
