This summer’s hottest beach sport: Ultimate Frisbee

An age old classic that will never grow old- Frisbee. Frisbee can be played with numbers from two and upwards so everyone can get involved. The best thing about Frisbee is that you can just play around between a couple of people. However, if you’re on a farm holiday in Devon with the family and you’re heading to the beach then why not try this year’s hottest beach sport for yourself? Here’s everything you need to know to play a game of ultimate Frisbee: How To Play Playing ultimate Frisbee is a limited contact sport, and just like playing rugby, you score points by managing to get the Frisbee to the opposition team's end zone. Rules of Ultimate Frisbee An Ultimate Frisbee game is made up of numbers of players between 7 and 12 on each side. You need to make sure the teams are equal so that it’s fair. A regulation sized field for a game of Ultimate Frisbee is 40 yards wide by 120 yards long. Once the field is measured out you need to measure 2 ‘end zones’’ at either end of the pitch that are 225 yards in length. To score a point a player from one of the teams must complete a catch with the Frisbee in the opposition team's end zone. The winner of the game is whoever gets to 15 points first, but there has to be a two-point margin between the two teams, or until either team reaches 17 points in total. Alternatively you can also choose to play two 15 minute halves. Teams have to pass the Frisbee in the air to their teammates. You start a game by selecting one of the teams throwing the Frisbee to the opposition team from their end zone- but make sure you are both ready before you begin! There are six ways possession of the Frisbee changes to the other team. 1. If the Frisbee hits the ground after a throw from a teammate and the other person fails to catch it or by an opposition player get between the pass and deflects it. 2. If a player walks or runs with the Frisbee. 3. If a defensive player intercepts the Frisbee. 4. If the Frisbee goes out of bounds or if it is caught out of bounds. 5. If a player on the attack doesn’t throw the Frisbee within the 10 second time limit. (The defender needs to count the 10 seconds aloud). 6. If a player catches the Frisbee in the other teams end zone, and consequently scores. The game starts up again where the player from the other team gained possession of the Frisbee, except in the case of a touchdown/point. After every point, the team that has scored must “throw off” back to the other team to start play again. Of course if you aren’t playing in a serious game environment then you can adjust the rules slightly on the number of players playing, or the amount of time a player gets before throwing the Frisbee on the attack, or if you are playing with younger children you might want to let them take some steps with the Frisbee. What you’ll need to play In order to play Ultimate Frisbee all you need is a Frisbee and eight objects to make as markers for to designate the end zones. Anything from rocks, jumpers, cones, and sticks etc. Get out there and give it a go, its great fun and the children will love it!
