North Devon family holidays are a popular choice for people looking to make the most of the amazing cycling routes around the area. And during the summer months there are a host of fantastic sportives to join, including the Smuggler Sportive. This will be the event’s second year and is set to be bigger and raise more money than its maiden year in 2014- it has even caught the eye of an Olympian, who has consequently signed up to take on the ride! The only charity cycle event to take place in Barnstaple features four distances, 25, 40, 50 or 80 miles, with money raised for two highly worthwhile causes, the North Devon Hospice and FORCE Cancer Charity, respectively. This year’s ride has even got the Olympic bronze medallist, snowboarder Jenny Jones, taking part, and will be riding the testing 80-mile route. Last year a strong turnout ensured the day saw 500 riders take part, with more than £5,000 raised. If you fancy giving the event a go yourself you can join riders heading off from Barnstaple Square on Sunday, June 7 as they set off to tackle picturesque historic coastal routes once used by smugglers for their elicit gains. A free breakfast is on offer for every rider before they set off, with food stations positioned at various points en route. Upon crossing the finishing line all riders receive a free beer thanks to the local Countrylife Brewery. If you’d like any more information on the event, or to sign up, go to www.thesmugglersportive.co.uk.
