It hasn’t always been plain sailing for the seaside destinations in the South West having steered through economic storms but now it has been revealed that the region has become some of the industry’s biggest employers in the entire country. A study by the Sheffield Hallam University which looked in to seaside tourism employment found that dozens of South West towns were boasting at least 1,000 local jobs directly provided by the tourism trade. And researchers have since announced that coastal towns in the region such as those around our holiday homes near Ilfracombe appeared to be going “from strength to strength”. The research conducted offered a projected figure of more than 200,000 jobs being directly supported in the seaside tourism sector in the UK- resulting in the industry offering a bigger employment status than aerospace, motor, pharmaceuticals or steel. Results revealed that as many as 63 resorts around the coast of England and Wales provided a minimum of 1,000 jobs that are directly supported by tourism, with 21 of them coming in the South West, in particular for North Devon was Ilfracombe where an estimated 1,100 jobs were made available.
