Top tips to capture epic photographs now that Autumn is upon us

September 2014 in the UK marks the official beginning of the autumn season. You may have noticed that due to lower than average temperatures in late August the leaves have started to change in colour in early September rather than the usual early October. The combination of splendid sunshine and a striking countryside of reds, oranges, yellows and browns means there’s no better time to go for a walk with your camera while staying in pet friendly North Devon holiday cottages. When you are out enjoying the beautiful scenery and landscapes across North Devon with your family, pets, and of course, camera you want to get the best images possible so here are some tips for you: When to go and take the best pictures Good photography is dependent on good light and the best light is experienced during those golden hours just following sunrise and prior to sunset, when the sun is low, just above the horizon. If you get to shoot some images at this time you’ll find light that is warm and soft which adds an enchanted illumination to every picture. However the elevation of the sun is also lower above the horizon from now until the spring time, which means good photographic settings exist throughout the day too. As colder nights creep in this also mean you have a greater chance of radiation fog forming in low-lying areas, creating an otherworldly landscape of shadows, half-seen trees, rising mist and mystical-esque rays of light. Streams, rivers, and lakes Those early mornings at lakes and ponds offer you the chance to find windless conditions when the water’s surface is mirror-like, the ideal time for anyone wanting to photograph tree reflections. Compose including both the trees and their reflections then isolate components of the scene. Take a walk along streams and rivers that are scattered around locations near our dog friendly holiday cottages near Woolacombe where you may get sightings of early morning mist steaming off the water. Look for fallen leaves on river rocks. If you have a tripod then why not try blurring the moving water by using a slow shutter speed? Hills Throughout the British summer the valleys are green, the bracken is green and the light is hazy. These conditions are not beneficial for good landscape photography. But come September things change. The bracken starts to die and hillsides are rejuvenated into a picturesque blanket of golden brown. Combine this colour change with better light and it’s the perfect time to head for the hills to get those breath-taking images. Our beautiful coast Most of the UK’s coastline is ordinarily devoid of woodlands but North Devon is never too far from such pleasantries. However seascapes are an appealing option for photographers at this time of year. Combine a mixture of low sun, clouds, mist and a stormy sea or any of these elements individually, and you have the potential to capture an exciting piece photography.
