Yellow-cheeked Gibbons are enjoying life at Exmoor Zoo

A pair of Yellow-cheeked gibbons are happily enjoying settling in to life in North Devon, making themselves at home at Exmoor Zoo. The pair, who originally came from a rescue centre in Vietnam, but have also been cared for at the Rare Species Centre in Kent. It is hoped that the pair, named Le and Chu, will become the focus of a breeding programme, due to their species being highly endangered. The male, Le is all black with golden yellow cheeks, whilst Chu is golden yellow with a hint of orange all over, and a tuft of black fur on the top of her head. The gibbons are known for being able to move through trees faster than a man can run, but for the moment, they are enjoying settling into the zoo and sampling the local North Devon vegetables and some primate pellets which have been especially tailored for their needs. The gibbon has a very distinctive call, which usually occurs during the morning. This call can sound quite intimidating, and can be used to attract a mate. When gibbons are partnered, their call becomes a duet, so it is hoped that Le and Chu will soon be singing together! If you would like to see Le and Chu in their new home, why not pay the zoo a visit whilst staying at one of our holiday cottages in North Devon, situated only a short drive away from the zoo. 20.02.15
