Find your perfect break at Smythen Farm

North Devon Beaches

The beaches of Woolacombe, Saunton, Croyde, Braunton and Putsborough are the best beaches that Devon has to offer, all within 20 minutes of Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages.

Bideford is home to The Big Sheep park and Milky Way Adventure Park. Dartington Crystal factory can be found near Great Torrington, and the famous fishing village of Clovelly can easily be visited on a day trip from here.

Sandy Bay

The closest beach (and our favourite here at Smythen Farm) is Sandy Bay, only 2.5 miles away from our cottages. It is such a picturesque beach that it's hard to believe it's in the United Kingdom rather than somewhere far more exotic. The sand is slate-coloured and perfect for making making sand castles; there are also rock pools ideal for children to spend hours with a net. The view is beautiful and best of all the beach is not used by many people. The only down-side is the 244 steps leading down to the beach, which means a decent workout on the return journey...but it is well worth it!

Note: Toilets are not available. There is ample parking at the top of the path down to the beach.

Woolacombe Sands

Woolacombe Sands is an award winning beach 7 miles from Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages, which boasts 3 miles of beautiful golden sand bordered by sand dunes. The water is famous for surfing and windsurfing, but it is also great for children, with lifeguards ensuring safe family swimming during the peak season. At one end of the beach lies the resort of Woolacombe with beach hire, stores, fish and chip shops, restaurants, hotels and toilets, and at the other end is the village of Putsborough.
Woolacombe has plenty of car parking and is wheelchair friendly.

Putsborough is at the south end of Woolacombe Sands beach and is 9 miles away from Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages. Putsborough is perfect for families and young children, with popular activities in summer including sand castle building, bathing, surfing and windsurfing. A car park and café is situated at the beach, but it is not as busy and commercial as Woolacombe.

Croyde is situated 10 miles from Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages and is another beautiful sandy beach, not as large as Woolacombe but well catered for by the village of Croyde, which has three pubs, shops and cafes. Like most North Devon beaches, Croyde is ideal for families with youngsters and in summertime has lifeguards manning the beach which is famous for its surf. Croyde beach is wheelchair friendly and offers decent car parking.

Saunton Sands
With three miles of golden sands backed with huge sand dunes, Saunton Sands can be found 12 miles south of Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages. Manned by life guards in the summer, the water is perfect for children to paddle in, as well as for surfing, windsurfing and general family beach life.

This beach is also wheel chair friendly and features shops and toilets.

Westward Ho

Westward Ho! borders the town of Bideford and is about 20 miles from Smythen Farm. Approximately two miles of sandy beach, Westward Ho! is famous for its pebble ridge, which is sandwiched between the beach and the Northam Burrows Country Park. Holidaymakers and locals all enjoy the beach which is ideal for surfing, canoeing and kite-flying. This area is home to a variety of birds, insects and wildflowers. The Royal North Devon Golf Course borders Westward Ho! beach.

Lovely stay at Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages hosted by Bill and his farm animals. The kids loved it - especially the upside down cottage. Thanks for a lovely stay in beautiful North Devon.

We stayed here for the May half term, in Honeysuckle cottage. There was plenty of space for two adults and two kids, the kitchen was well equipped and there was even a washing machine (very useful when you have two little boys!). The cottage faced the courtyard (the swimming pool). Some of the cottages face onto the field, so have an amazing view. The farm is lovely, there are animals to feed, a small heated and covered swimming pool, playground and play room. Kids

Many thanks to all at Smythen Farm – we stayed in Fisherswood Cottage for a 4 night stay on 16th March. We found the cottage really well laid out and very comfortable. The location for visiting North Devon is as good as you could get. A great break.

My wife and I have just returned from a week`s holiday in Honey Pot cottage at Smythen Farm and enjoyed every minuet of our stay. Despite it being the middle of march and the wind blowing full force outside the cottage was lovely and warm. It was well appointed clean and had all we needed to make our stay perfect. Despite dropping in on spec on a Sunday afternoon we were greeted with a friendly welcome from our host and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. In the h
